340. Steamed Ikan Bawal Hitam

I was out all the time the other day, so when come morning the next day, my mind was blurred and I couldn't think much what to cook for the day. I was lazy too due to not having my rest in the afternoon.

Luckily hubby came home from work as Night Supervisor at 730am and brought home these 'Ikan Bawal Hitam'. So apa lagi... I go and steamed them :)

My son Farouk will come home for lunch at 1230pm and he likes anything with 'Ketchup'. Hubby too of course. But the rest of us girls like it cooked with 'Asamboi'.

To be fair... I cooked both!

Our favorite - Steamed 'Ikan Bawal Hitam' with 'Asamboi'

The Men's favorite - Steamed 'Ikan Bawal Hitam' with Ketchup

Easy...then I just placed these two fishes into my 2 tiered steamer and wait for them to cook for 25 minutes.

To prepare, sliced all these ingredients - 2 inches ginger, 4 small shallots, 1 big red chilli and 6 garlic.

Divide these ingredients into two - one for each fish.

Steamed Ikan Bawal Hitam with Asamboi :-
1. Clean the fish, spread some salt, aji and pepper over the fish

2. Place the fish on a plate

3. In a bowl, add 1 cup of water, salt and aji to taste (not too much)

4. Sprinkle the half of the ingredients over the fish. PUT 2 pieces of Asamboi beside the fish.

5. Pour the water from the bowl onto the fish

6. Put into the steamer.

Steamed Ikan Bawal Hitam with Ketchup :-

1. Do no.1 & no.2 as above

2. In a bowl, add half a cup of Dark Soy Sauce (ketchup). Add half a cup of water to it. Stir.

3. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar, salt & ajinomoto to taste

4. Sprinkle the remaining half of ingredients onto the fish

5. Pour the ketchup over the fish

6. Put into the steamer.

That was it. Easy!

Next I would just have to cook one vegetable dish and white rice :)

I am sure you have your own way of steaming this fish.

But it was heaven to hear my son says during lunch, ' Nyaman nya ma...Sedap!' :))

Cheerio.

Salam Mak Isah....

I told you so... We have similar taste in food... :).. I cooked this "healthy" dish last week but of course the amatuer version...

I washed the fish and sprinkled it with pinch of salt.... Then put it on the plate... Then i cut the ginger into small "slices" and put it all over the fish and the plate... Next, kukus...

It was served with kicap pedas.. and the girls were quite amazed when they discovered that their mom know how to cook and very delicious fish some more... ;P...

The sayur was kacang panjang rebus served with hot white rice... What else you can expect for a healthy diet...:)

p/s: I never knew ikan kukus can be served with asam boi.. Learnt something new today...

You are such a fair mama! You cooked to satisfy both sides. haha...

For this type of fish, I prefer it fried. Crispy and wanginya....

Judging from the other readers' comments, I guess most Chinese, if they cook bawal hitam, it will be deep fried, whereas for Malays, it will be steamed. Even my mum deep fried it with ginger and add kicap. I have never eaten it steamed before, but now that I have a house and family of my own already, I did think of trying to steam bawal hitam, but can't find any steam bawal hitam recipe. Thanks to you, Mak Isah, I have finally found it!

P/S: All the while, I was hesitant of trying it the steam way becos I don't know whether the steam style will work well with bawal hitam or not. But then again, I takut nak cuba becos if it really doesn't go well, my hubby will only eat little bit, and then the rest I have to finish it which is too much for me. Now your recipe has given me confidence. Btw, I dislike deep-frying - very messy and oily.

Salam Ummu dear :) you really make mak isah smiled...you're right we do have similar taste about food, if we are to sit at a table we can go on eating and eating eh?
Mak isah read your blog about your maid being away and you need to cook, so...was that what you cooked when you said you cooked a healthy diet? he he...what a coincidence! and nice... :)

Yes dear, if you use asamboi, maybe lessen the salt a bit.

ha ha.. a fair mama...thanks mNhL :) Yes, if fried it's nice too. Hubby likes anything fried so I always tell him 'not too much', so I cooked nearest to what he like if steamed and that is with ketchup :)

Exactly reanaclaire...eat them hot, anything fried nice to eat hot :)
Steamed bawal hitam also taste as good, over here ikan bawal putih costs a fortune and not often available like ikan bawal hitam.

Try with asamboi, my girls and I simply love it!

You're most welcome Alice dear :) Try steaming your ikan bawal hitam. Like you Mak isah always avoid frying, one it's messy, two it smells and three frying you just have to be on guard in case they burn LOL..

A small family like yours, one ikan bawal hitam will be enough for a start. Mak isah cooked two.

Don't be takut, try it! Mak isah hopes your hubby will like it :)

The next time use the Microwave Oven. It is easy, fast and done in just ten minutes. It taste better because in Microwave oven the nutrition does not evaporate.

We now steam all fish, corn or reheating using the microwave oven. Maybe you should try.

It is easy; prepare anything to be steam the same way you normally do. Cling raped it with clear Microwave safe cling rapper and placed it in the Microwave oven on high for just 10 minutes. Voila! you get your steam fish on the table in 8 to 10 minutes intead of hours. You save time and energy.

Have a nice day.
